Multilayer Farm · Design

Build the acre once. Four floors grow on it.

A 3.5 ft raised bed, a canopy plant every 8 ft, one trellis line and two drip lines per bed. This page gives the layout, the spacing and the set-up list.

The plan

Beds 3.5 ft wide, 8 ft apart.

Beds take about 44% of the acre; the 4.5 ft paths carry the pickers, the drip mains and the water. Every number below follows from this layout.

  • ●Floor 4: drumstick or papaya every 8 ft, in the bed centre
  • ■Trellis pole every 16 ft, with a 1 m arm and two wires at 6 ft
  • ●Floor 3: bitter gourd about every 1.4 m along the bed
  • ⋯Floor 1: two rhizome rows about 70 cm apart, plants 20 cm apart
  • ⋯Floor 2: coriander and methi in the gaps, sown every 10 days
  • —Two 16 mm drip lines per bed

Spacing

Who goes where, and how many.

Rhizomes take about a fifth of the plants they would in a single-crop field. That is the price of sharing the bed, and why the yield figures here are lower than single-crop brochures.

Papaya: plant two seedlings per pit and keep the best hermaphrodite after first flowers (about month 4–5). Plant counts are for one standard acre and scale with your area.

Roots

Four floors, four feeding depths.

Greens feed from the top 5 cm, rhizomes from 20 cm, gourd vines from 40 cm and the tree from up to a metre. Less competition for food, but not none: we feed each floor separately through the drip line.

Light

Shade helps rhizomes, up to a point.

Not double, but a real gain. Too much shade beats it. So we keep the shade over the rhizome rows at 25–40% by thinning and training the gourd vines.

Ginger fresh-rhizome yield index (open field = 100) at different shade levels, pot trial, Kerala Agricultural University. Field screening there found the best ginger yield near 25% shade, and turmeric tolerating up to 50%.

The top floor

Drumstick or papaya?

Both stand at 10 ft and share the bed centre. The Kendra advises after your soil test and a look at virus pressure in your village.

Recommended top floor

Drumstick

  • Pods from month 6, picked like a vegetable and paid every Monday
  • Tolerates heat and short dry spells
  • No virus link with the gourd floor

Watch for: Open-market price swings widely (₹25–60 a kg at Pune market yards this August). Prune to 8–10 ft so pods stay in reach and branches do not snap.

Higher second-year income

Papaya

  • Fruit from month 8, and the largest income in year 2
  • Paid at harvest settlement (Step 3), above the mandi price

Watch for: Papaya ringspot virus and aphids; stems snap in wind, so tie them to the poles. It is allowed under gourd vines only with your Kendra agronomist's go-ahead.

Set-up list

What you build, and what it costs.

Beds, drip and trellis are the one-time cost. Treated bamboo lasts about 3–4 years; galvanised poles last longer and cost more. The Kendra collects quotations for your area.

ItemWhat it isIndicative cost
Raised bedsAbout 1,660 m of beds, 3.5 ft wide, 20–25 cm high, with open furrows₹12,000
DripTwo laterals per bed (about 3,300 m), filter, main and sub-main₹55,000
TrellisAbout 340 poles every 16 ft, 1 m arm and two wires at 6 ft, anchors and ties₹85,000 (₹70,000 bamboo to ₹1.2 lakh GI)
Total set-upOne time, per standard acre₹1,52,000

Layout tips

Four small decisions that save a season.

Direction

Run beds north to south so every bed gets morning and afternoon sun.

Drainage

Raise beds 20–25 cm and keep furrows open. Rhizomes rot where water stands.

Collection point

Keep a clear 3 ft gap at the gate for weighing, grading and a small nursery.

Windbreak

Plant a tall non-host border, such as maize or sorghum, on the windward side to cut wind and aphids.
