Multilayer Farm · Design
A 3.5 ft raised bed, a canopy plant every 8 ft, one trellis line and two drip lines per bed. This page gives the layout, the spacing and the set-up list.
The plan
Beds take about 44% of the acre; the 4.5 ft paths carry the pickers, the drip mains and the water. Every number below follows from this layout.
Spacing
Rhizomes take about a fifth of the plants they would in a single-crop field. That is the price of sharing the bed, and why the yield figures here are lower than single-crop brochures.
| Floor | Crop | Where | Spacing | Plants per acre | First money |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Drumstick (annual pod type) or papaya (Red Lady type) | Bed centre, every 8 ft along the bed | 8 × 8 ft | 680 | Pods month 6 · fruit month 8 |
| 3 | Bitter gourd (hybrid) | Along the bed, up to the 6 ft trellis | About 1.4 m apart | ≈ 1,200 | Day 55–60 |
| 1 | Turmeric or ginger | Two rows, about 35 cm either side of the centre | Rows 70 cm · plants 20 cm | ≈ 16,500 | Dig month 9–10 |
| 2 | Coriander, methi | In the gaps and at bed edges | Strips, sown every 10 days | — | Day 30–45 |
Papaya: plant two seedlings per pit and keep the best hermaphrodite after first flowers (about month 4–5). Plant counts are for one standard acre and scale with your area.
Roots
Greens feed from the top 5 cm, rhizomes from 20 cm, gourd vines from 40 cm and the tree from up to a metre. Less competition for food, but not none: we feed each floor separately through the drip line.
Light
Not double, but a real gain. Too much shade beats it. So we keep the shade over the rhizome rows at 25–40% by thinning and training the gourd vines.
The top floor
Both stand at 10 ft and share the bed centre. The Kendra advises after your soil test and a look at virus pressure in your village.
Watch for: Open-market price swings widely (₹25–60 a kg at Pune market yards this August). Prune to 8–10 ft so pods stay in reach and branches do not snap.
Watch for: Papaya ringspot virus and aphids; stems snap in wind, so tie them to the poles. It is allowed under gourd vines only with your Kendra agronomist's go-ahead.
Set-up list
Beds, drip and trellis are the one-time cost. Treated bamboo lasts about 3–4 years; galvanised poles last longer and cost more. The Kendra collects quotations for your area.
| Item | What it is | Indicative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Raised beds | About 1,660 m of beds, 3.5 ft wide, 20–25 cm high, with open furrows | ₹12,000 |
| Drip | Two laterals per bed (about 3,300 m), filter, main and sub-main | ₹55,000 |
| Trellis | About 340 poles every 16 ft, 1 m arm and two wires at 6 ft, anchors and ties | ₹85,000 (₹70,000 bamboo to ₹1.2 lakh GI) |
| Total set-up | One time, per standard acre | ₹1,52,000 |
Indicative costs for one standard acre in Maharashtra; actual quotations vary by area and material. Set-up can be financed: see the Commercials page.
Layout tips
Run beds north to south so every bed gets morning and afternoon sun.
Raise beds 20–25 cm and keep furrows open. Rhizomes rot where water stands.
Keep a clear 3 ft gap at the gate for weighing, grading and a small nursery.
Plant a tall non-host border, such as maize or sorghum, on the windward side to cut wind and aphids.
